What can I say on my blog?

Esther Nelson
stuck writing a blog

Ah, the difficulties of writing a blog on a regular basis! Just about all of us know it is good practice to write a blog regularly, but just about all of us struggle to maintain a regular schedule, either through lack of time, or lack of inspiration.

The time issue is something we'll leave to all those experts out there who claim they can help you get your time back, but the inspiration aspect is something I'd like to address here. Some people seem to have a gold mine of ideas and can write a plethora of interesting and exciting blogs. If only we all had this ability!

So what do you write about? A blog is supposed to reflect your opinions on things, so always bear in mind for a starter that your knowledge and expertise is being showcased in your blog. That should sway the way you write to start with! But where to get the inspiration? Here are a few ideas:

  • General news in the world or your local area: if there's something everything is talking about, join in. It doesn't matter if you go off the subject you're working in occasionally, you are after all writing as you and you live in the world too!
  • News from your industry: You may have a particularly complex or technical industry, but if something significant happens, like a law being changed that will affect you or the annual conference was run last week, you can show your readers what it will eventually mean to them, or how you took part in the conference, or how it makes your life easier and therefore benefits your clients
  • Educate your readers: This is all education really, but if there's something that just doesn't click with clients first time and its important for them to know, write a blog or a series of blog posts to drive things home a bit more (make sure your clients are subscribed to your blog or it gets posted where your clients will see it!)
  • Case Studies: If you've got a great client who's problem you solved, why not write a blog showing how you helped the client? If its appropriate to name the client, ask them for permission, if not, you can always turn it into a more general example with no names. Naming people is always good for your reputation though, and of course displays Social Proof of what you are doing.
  • Finally, what have you been doing? This is very interesting to the reader - we all like to know what someone is up to, and if they are reading your blog because of what you do, its of particular interest.

So next time you're getting a bit stuck, have a thing around these areas.
